Welcome, streamers, video content creators, and let's-players of all stripes! If you'd like to play Penny Larceny for your audience, here are some tips and tricks that may help you.
Up front, let's be clear that we have no restrictions on creating let's play content of this game. Our music will not result in DMCA strikes, and we have no concerns about 'spoiling' the story for people by showing off big plot reveals and late-game content. There's no 'wrong' way to play it and we want you to come at this in whatever manner you're comfy with.
We also have a Press Kit available, if you'd like some graphics you can work into thumbnails and your stream layout.
We recommend your facecam be placed in the lower left or lower right position. The upper left is also serviceable but may cover up some character faces. The upper right frequently has pop-up indicators and the Crimr star rating, and should not be covered. Shrinking the overall image to fit off to the side is also workable.
In the options menu, you can select your font -- by default it uses a comic-book style font, but if you find it hard to read, you can switch to a basic sans-serif font. For maximum accessibility, you can use the OpenDyslexia font. You can also choose to use monochrome text or inverted text as you prefer.
You can use your mouse wheel to scroll back and forth in time and change decisions. But since you cannot lose the game, only make capers entertainingly messy, don't be afraid of failure!
You can save at any time using the save icon in the corner of the screen, or by hitting the Escape key to bring up the menu. This can be done even during choices.
If you'd like to take a screenshot, use the S key. Use the H key or right click to hide the text so you only see the art, if you want.
No spoilers, don't worry! But we should explain the basic structure of the game...
Your first playthrough starts with a tutorial caper, which can be skipped on future playthroughs. After that, you will play three different capers.
Depending on what boss you worked with the most, you'll get a fourth "endgame" caper which finishes that playthrough. The game is designed to be relatively short, but very replayable with a variety of capers and bosses and endgames.
If you want to only play the game once for your audience and move on, we recommend selecting the same boss for all capers, or doing one caper for each boss.
You can mix it up with two different bosses, but that will earn you a 'disloyal' ending, which is shorter and missing the 'date' scene if you are romancing the boss. For content creators we recommend full loyalty to see the full scene.
The ultimate goal is to complete all five endings, and unlock the true sixth ending -- but that's a lot of time and effort and we know variety content creators need to keep things fresh. So no worries if you can only do one playthrough, or have to stop partway through! Your viewers can always play the game themselves to see the parts they missed.
Depending on how distracted you get by chat, one full playthrough can be about five to ten hours of stream. That's just a guess, though!
Are you really pressed for time and can't devote more than one short stream to the game? That's fine! Try playing our free demo on Steam and Itch. It includes introductions for all the characters, and a single caper. A perfect bite sized chunk!
Penny Larceny is intended for a mature audience that's comfortable with some level of violence, crime, and sexuality. We recommend you review the content warnings for the game, and provide this link to your viewers as well. While the game can deal with some triggering subject matter, we don't feel you'll need heavy disclaimers and warnings -- there are no graphic and shocking depictions. Just make sure those who want to see the CW have the link available. The game itself will provide the URL on-screen when you first start playing as well.
There are two potentially triggering moments that occur between your first and second caper (suicidal ideation), and between the second and third (death of a family member). Penny will give you the option to skip these flashbacks, while summarizing the outcomes. You may also want to avoid the caper "Don't Copy That Floppy" is it addresses these story points.
When you first start a game, you will be given options for adjusting the content to suit you and your audience -- the game can be tuned down to being relatively SFW...
